                                                                        BEAUTY & THE BEAST, Jr.
                                                                        AUDITION MONOLOGUES

BELLE: Morning, Monsieur. Where am I off to? The bookshop. I just finished the most wonderful story about a beanstalk and an ogre… Oh, never mind. Good morning kindly bookseller. I’ve come to return the book I borrowed. Finished already! Oh, I couldn’t put it down. Have you got anything new? Not since yesterday? That’s all right. I’ll borrow… this one! I know, I’ve read it twice. Well, it’s my favorite. Far-off places, daring sword fights, magic spells, a prince in disguise… You mean, it’s mine? You insist? But sir! Well, thank you. Thank you very much!

BELLE: (To the Beast) who’s there! Oh, then you’re the one responsible for locking up my poor father! Release my father at once! No! Wait! Forgive me! Please let him out. Can’t you see he’s not well? He’s an old man. He could die! Wait, please…take me instead! If I take his place, will you let him go? Come into the light and let me see you. (Belle sees him and reacts.) You have my word. I will stay here forever. (Belle falls down in tears.) I’ll never see him again…and I didn’t even get to say goodbye.

BEAST: I’m just fooling myself. She’ll never see me as anything...but a monster. How long must this go on? This cruel trick of fate? I simply made one careless wrong decision and that witch was gone and left me in this state, an object of revulsion and derision… hated. Is there no one who can show me how to win the world’s forgiveness? No! What did they say? Shower her with compliments… impress her with your wit… act like a gentleman. Act like a gentleman! Act like a gentleman!

BEAST: Belle, are you happy here? With me? Is something wrong? You miss your father? There is a way to see him again. This mirror will show you anything …anything you wish to see. He is lost? You should go to him. You’re not my prisoner, Belle. You haven’t been for a long time. Take the mirror with you. So you’ll always have a way to look back…and remember me. Go…Go. (She exits) I’ll never see her again.

MAURICE: I don’t mean to intrude, but I’ve lost my way in the woods and I need a place to stay for the night... I heard that! I know there’s someone here and I’ll thank you to step out where I can see you! Wait... wait... wait! You’re a clock! And you’re talking! This is incredible! How is this accomplished? Well, I’m stumped. Maybe it’s some kind of new-fangled, scientific gadget. I beg your pardon. I don’t mean to be rude. It’s just that I’ve never seen a ta.. a tal... a talking… AAAACHOOO!

GASTON: (To Belle, Handing her flowers) for you…Mademoiselle. I know I shouldn’t have, so don’t mention it. Belle, this is the day your dreams come true! Picture this. A rustic hunting lodge. My little wife massaging my feet while the strapping boys play on the floor with the dogs. We’ll have six or seven. Boys, not dogs. So, Belle, what’ll it be? (Belle leaves.) That Belle, always playing hard to get. She turned me down for now, but I’ll have Belle for my wife. Make no mistake about that!

LEFOU: (To Gaston) You didn’t miss a shot, Gaston. You’re the greatest hunter in the whole world. No beast alive stands a chance against you! And no girl for that matter. (Gaston: It’s true, Lefou. And I’ve got my sights set on that one) The inventor’s daughter? (Gaston: She’s the lucky girl I’m going to marry) But she’s – (Gaston: The most beautiful girl in town) I know, but – (Gaston: And don’t I deserve the best?) Well, of course you do!

LUMIERE: Enchanté, Mademoiselle! Nonsense Cogsworth, she’s not a prisoner, she’s our guest! We must make her feel welcome here!... Of course... of course! But what is dinner without a little music? Ma chere mademoiselle, it is with deepest pride and greatest pleasure that we welcome you tonight. And now we invite you to relax. Let us pull up a chair as the Dining Room proudly presents... your dinner!

COGSWORTH: Know everything about this castle? Well… actually, I do! May I draw your attention to our hand painted ceiling complete with cherubs frolicking in delight amidst the nymphs and centaurs… Now if you will note the unusual inverted archways, you will see that this is yet another example of the late neo-classic baroque period. And as I always say… if it’s not baroque, don’t fix it!

MRS POTTS: (To Beast) try to be patient. The poor girl has lost her father. We won’t be human again that soon. These things take time. Master, you must help her see past how you look. You could start by trying to make yourself more presentable. Be gentle. And above all….you must control your temper! Deep breaths, Master. Deep breaths.

Audition Song Options

Please select one song clip for your audition. Please make sure to practice with the version that does not have vocals, as you will be expected to know the lyrics for your audition.
Belle
With a dreamy, far-off look
and her nose stuck in a book.
What a puzzle to the rest of us is Belle.
Oh, isn't  this amazing?
It's my favorite part because
you'll see...
Here's where she meets Prince
Charming, but she won't discover
that it's him 'til chapter three.
Be Our Guest
Be our guest! Be our guest!
Put our service to the test.
Tie a napkin "round your neck, cherie,
and we'll provide the rest.
Soupe du jour! Hot hors d'oeuvres!
Why, we only live to serve.
Try the grey stuff. It's delicious!
Don't believe me? Ask the dishes! They can sing, they can dance!
After all Miss, this is France! And a dinner here is never second best!
Go on, unfold your menu, take a glance and then you'll be our guest
Oui, our guest! Be our guest!
Beauty and the Beast
Ever just the same, ever a surprise.
Ever as before, ever just as sure
as the sun will rise.
Tale as old as time, tune as old as song.
Bitter sweet and strange...
Finding you can change,
learning you were wrong.
Certain as the sun rising in the east.
Tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme...Beauty and the Beast.
